WATCHDSK is made for those people who have large disks (especially
LAN administrators) and want to know where the disk space is being
used.
~
Using the program is very easy with either a mouse or from the
keyboard. With a mouse, press one of the red buttons. From the
keyboard, press the first letter of the title of each button to
activate the button. Pressing 'E' here will exit back to the
main screen.
~
The concept of WATCHDSK is simple: From a starting directory,
WATCHDSK scans all the sub-directories and finds out how much space
the next directory down and its sub-directories take up. For
example, if you are at the root directory in the diagram below,
WATCHDSK will report the sizes of the USERS, MAIL, MISC, PUBLIC,
and PROGRAMS with the sizes of their sub-directories included.
If you were in the USERS directory when you ran WATCHDSK, the sizes
of the directories DANA, ERIC, BRETT, HECTOR, AUDREY, CLIFF, NORMA,
and GREG would be displayed.
~

| +-ERIC
+--MAIL +-BRETT
| +-HECTOR
+--MISC +-AUDREY
| +-CLIFF
+--PUBLIC +-NORMA
| +-GREG

It is important to note that the directory sizes displayed are in K
(meaning 1024 bytes) and the size shows how much disk space is being
used, NOT how many total file bytes there are. These are actually
two different numbers since DOS allocates disk space on a cluster
basis (usually 2048 bytes/cluster). That means if you have 100
2 byte files, you are actually using 100 * 2048 = 204,800 bytes of
disk space, NOT just 200 bytes as it may appear. Also note that
the directory size includes hidden and system files as well as
files stored in hidden directories.
~
The feature that makes WATCHDSK so valuable is the ability to store
directory names and associated sizes with the date of that size. If
one moring you have a lot less disk space than expected, run
WATCHDSK and compare today's directory sizes with a previous day's
sizes--WATCHDSK makes this particularly easy with it's side-by-side
column display. By using the normal cursor control keys, you can
scroll through the list (including side-to-side) to see a history
of your disk space usage.
~
And WATCHDSK is even more powerful if you register and get the
updated version! This demonstration program does not have the
ability to sort the rows of the report by size or change in size,
only by name. But if you register, you have the ability to press two
buttons and instantly sort on size or change in size--Seeing where
lost disk space went couldn't be easier.
~
In addition, by registering, you will get the upgrade which can
handle 2048 directories (this version has a maximum capacity of 256
directories). Plus, the upgrade will remember the last 6 directory
sizes for each directory, as opposed to the limit of 3 for this
version. Both this copy and the upgrade version only record the last
3 and 6 updates respectively in order to keep the DIRSIZE.DAT files
small and to keep updating as quick as possible.
~
Last but not least, the upgrade is personalized with your personal
or company name in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
~
Before getting to the registration information, an explanation of the
buttons on the main screen is in order.
~
~
SORT - This button prompts you for which order you want your list to
be sorted in. The choices are by Name, by Size and by Change
in size. The default is by Name.
~
UPDATE - The Update button shifts all of the size columns over one to
the right, and fills in the latest directory size
information in the first column on the left. Any time you
update the directory size information, you will be prompted
to save the information when you quit.
~
PRINT - Printing the directory size information is as easy as
pressing the PRINT button!
~
DISPLAY - If you have a VGA monitor, you can click on Display to
toggle between 50 line mode and 25 line mode. This allows
you to see more information at a glance.
~
HELP - The Help button brings you to this screen.
~
QUIT - Quit the WATCHDSK program. If you have made changes to the
information, you will be prompted to save it.
~
~
~
~
Any time you save the directory information, a small hidden file
named DIRSIZE.DAT is created in the directory where you are at. This
allows WATCHDSK to keep a history of your directory sizes.
